Five Mutations That Never Happened To Sayid by akire [Reviews - 0]
1. Agrypnia Sayid tossed another piece of salt-soaked wood onto the fire and watched it crackle in a greenish lick of flame. Around him, those left on the beach shifted in restless sleep. Once, nights like these would be punctuated by moans and whimpers as the survivors relived the crash in their dreams. Now, they slept silently, too worn out by the day to even dream. A long time ago, he had wished he could dream. Now he was grateful that he had no such capacity. He didn’t dream. He never slept. Here, his curse had a purpose. Sayid, ever wakeful, kept watch. 2. Communion "We found the transceiver but it’s not working. Can anybody help?" Help. They were beyond help now, but what could would it do to tell them all this. They would want to know why. Then they would give in to hopelessness. Then, most likely, they would turn on the bearer of bad news. He had been scanning as far as he could, as hard as he could, ever since he awoke on this forsaken island. Beyond this beach there was – emptiness. Nothingness. Nowhere he had been had felt so separate from humanity. Empathic ability was near-useless here. But perhaps… "Yes." 3. Absolute Zero When he forgets himself, he causes mists. Humid tropical air flows over his innate cold sink and turns into a bad special effect. He thinks Sawyer has noticed, but so far he has yet to say anything. Probably waiting for an opportune moment. But being a walking refrigerator has some benefits. He can hunt far from the cave and the beach, and never have to worry about the meat turning bad. The water he collects always seems more refreshing. Little things. But in his dreams, his cold touch stretches far across the ocean, and they can all walk safely home. 4. Phased In a dark corner of his soul, he suspects he caused the plane crash. He had drunk coffee, taken pills, done everything he could think of to stop himself from relaxing. But what if he had. What if he had sunk into the headrest, let his eyes drift closed for just a moment...sunk deeper, automatically finding the phase-space that would let him pass unhindered through the material of the aircraft, through the sensitive electronics. He’s just not sure, so he can’t atone. All he knows is what he found when he awoke. Sayid volunteers for every trip into the jungle. 5. Atavism He closes his eyes, lifts his face, sniffs the air. sweatfearsexhaustionfruitstonewater He gestures curtly, then vanishes into the dense foliage, leaving them behind. Movement, breathing. His head snaps up, but his civilized mind steps in this time. Friend. "You shouldn’t sneak up on me," he admonishes wearily. Sawyer watches the claws retract with undisguised interest. "You wouldn’t skewer me, Ahab." His eyes roam over Sayid and down to the wild boar lying dead at their feet. "Damn. Those things are better than the gun." He produces a knife and begins jointing the kill. Sawyer’s easy acceptance makes Sayid feel human again. |
