The Concert by Cedara [Reviews - 0]

The Concert
by
Cedara

It took them a while to agree on something rather profane. Rose wanted to see Abba performing, which wasn't to the Doctor's taste. The Doctor offered to take Rose to a particular stunning performance of Carmen in Paris, but despite the attractiveness of the idea to dress up, she didn't want to deal with a rather serious piece of music. Finally, they agreed on a jazz concert.

The Doctor had chosen a concert on the planet Tragalia, which was a human colony with a tendency to attract musicians. Concerts there usually went from sunrise to sundown, with breaks for everyone in between, artists and concert-goers mingling in a buffet hall set aside for just that function.

While the free food had consisted of sandwiches which almost looked too similar to the things she used to buy back on Earth, the free drinks only consisted of water. There were alcoholic drinks available but neither she nor the Doctor had any local currency with them, so getting that was out of the question.

Holding the two glasses in her hands, Rose looked around, wondering where the Doctor had gone to, as he wasn't by the red pillar where she'd left him. Unfortunately, someone else met her gaze. He'd been nearby when Rose was at the bar, trying to hit on every human or human looking woman in his vicinity. The bloke wasn't only disgusting in his attitude, but also in his taste of clothes. And now he was standing in her way.

"Hey, darling - is that drink for me?" he said, and Rose could easily smell his alcohol-fumed breath.

"Sod off." She walked around him but he was hard at her heels, stopping her once more.

"Oh, come on, darling. A sweetie like you must be looking for a guy like me..."

"Sod off," Rose simply said again. "I'm not interested."

"But, you really need me..."

"Haven't you heard the young lady," a voice came from slightly behind them, rolling the R slightly. "Your attention isn't welcomed." He put a hand on the man's shoulder. "Don't you think you should go home and get some sleep?"

"Sleep...," the drunkard murmured.

"Yes, you're tired, and you need to go home."

Without another word, the drunkard left. Rose looked at the helpful stranger. He wasn't much taller than her, dressed in a suit and an oddly coloured jumper with question-marks on. Aside from that, he had a panama hat and a black umbrella, with a red question mark as the handle.

"Thank you," Rose said.

"You're welcome. You haven't seen a girl in a bomber jacket, by any chance?"

"No, sorry."

"All right then, I'm sure she must be somewhere..." He lifted his hat in greeting and walked away, just in the same moment as the Doctor came up to meet her.

"Ah, the drinks!" He smiled at Rose.

"Doctor, have you seen...?"

"The man with the hat?"

"Yes," Rose answered. "You watched us?"

"No, I didn't." The gong announced that the break time was over within the next three minutes. Taking Rose's hand, he said. "Come on, I don't want to miss the second half."

She was dragged off back to the concert area where the second half had just begun as they reached their seats. Later, as they took off in the TARDIS again, she'd forgotten what she wanted to ask him.
